Wednesday, May 9, 2012... training at HACC
Thursday, May 10, 2012 Tonight while Fireman Brian Riddle was eating dinner at the Tokyo Diner he noticed the building starting to fill with smoke. He walked outside and called communications reporting the box. Lower Paxton Units were dispatched and Engine 33 requested the 1st alarm while still en route due to multiple calls and the fireman from 32 on scene reporting a working fire. The Wagon (Captain Strausbaugh) dumped with 6 as the bells were dropping and arrived second due and laid it's own seperate supply line with Wagon 34 picking up 33's line. The crew pulled a backup line, forced a door and breeched a partial wall on side A to gain entry, and met Engine 33 on divsion 1 to assist with fire attack. Crews from 32-1 and 33 encountered heavy smoke, moderate heat, and fire conditions in the cockloft and roof area and made quick work of the fire. Half of the Wagon's crew who were Truckmen assisted by throwing mutiple ground ladders of Tiller 34 and began opening up the exterior soffit area. The Wagon supplied Tiller 34 and staged for side C operations if necesssary. Crews went ready in about two hours and initial companies held the fire to the occupancy of origin.
Saturday, May 5, 2012 The Company had 443 man-hours of training in the month of April. Included in this was hose management drills, drivers training, CPR re-certification, response SOG training, and walk troughs of high hazard buildings. Firefighter Trahan finally tested and passed his Firefighter 1 and received his black front.
Wednesday, May 2, 2012 Progress Firefighter and United States Marine Corps Cpl Brian M Riddle was welcomed back home to Susquehanna Township today in Hero style. Brian was recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland due to injuries he had suffered from a mortar while serving in Afghanistan. He had suffered injuries to his neck, jaw and hip resulting in his second purple heart while recovering. When it was found that Brian was coming home for a few days, a plan came together to bring him home in the manner he deserved. Under the direction of Lt. Mekailek, the company, Central Pennsylvania and beyond came together with an outpouring of support. Leaving the hospital, Brian was picked up in a stretch limousine from Unique Limousine in Susquehanna Township. He was then escorted by Montgomery County (Maryland) Police and Fire Departments who shut down Interstate 270 and had apparatus staged on overpasses for his trek north. Meeting him at the Pennsylvania state line was the Progress Fire Chief's buggy and about 20 motorcycles from Guardian Knights and other motorcycle clubs. Escorting him the entire way with some traffic control help in Dillsburg from their Police and Fire Departments, the motorcade made its way to Susquehanna Twp. The procession met at Valley Road and Progress Ave. where about 25 pieces of fire apparatus from three counties awaited his arrival. Shortly thereafter, the procession began and made its way along Progress Ave. to Walnut St. before turning onto Locust Ln., Wood St., Maple St., and finally ending at the Progress Fire Company where Tower 32 and Ladder 34 had a 40' x 60' flag arch. Brian exited and was greeted with cheers, applause and tears from family, friends, brother and sister firefighters, motorcycle clubs, media and neighbors. As the house siren cycled, a Welcome Home message was displayed on the scroll board and company pagers followed by the traditional three rings of the house bell signifying that the call is over and everyone is home safe. After Brian spoke to everyone in attendance, folks assembled inside the hall for some stories, food and drink, and to celebrate this happy occasion that Cpl Riddle is home. We can’t say Thank You enough for everyone's support and assistance with making the event happen and to the extent that it did. In particular, Truckman Leonard for his assistance in communication with Montgomery County, Chief Martin and all of the Susquehanna Township Police Department, Fire Marshall George Drees, Michele Parsons, Agostina's Pizza, Montgomery County Police and Fire Departments, Dauphin County Communications Center, Wounded Warrior Project for supplying Brian with clothes, shoes and a computer. Brian arrived at Walter Reed with nothing except for what he had left Germany with while being treated for his injuries. A big Thank You to Walter Reed Medical Center for their amazing work and working so close with our members to be able to visit Brian anytime!
